Right: Court appearance for Donald Wacker, convicted in the kidnapping, rape, and slaying in 1990 of Nancy Shoemaker. Al Schaben photo.

Below: Nancy Shoemaker dated about 1990. She was nine years old.
Nineteen years ago, 9-year-old Nancy Shoemaker disappeared while walking to a south Wichita gas station to buy a 7-up for her sick brother.

Her body was found seven months later in a Sumner County hedgerow. She had been kidnapped, raped and killed.

Now friends of the Shoemakers and others who remember the case — including employees of the Phillips 66 station where Nancy headed that day — are circulating petitions in hopes of keeping one of her kidnappers in prison.

Donald Wacker, who was convicted of aiding the kidnapping and murder, will go before the Kansas Parole Board in October...

Wacker is serving a sentence of 16 years to life for helping kidnap Nancy. He testified during trial that he sat by and watched while a co-defendant, Doil Lane, raped and strangled the girl...

Wacker has gone before a parole board twice. In 2004, Joyce Wacker, Donald's mother said on his behalf, "actually, he wasn't the one who done it," Joyce Wacker said...

Nancy Shoemaker would have turned 29 this year...

Copies of the petition are at Davis-Moore auto dealerships in Wichita and at the Presto Phillips 66 station at 2356 S. Seneca. It also is available on the Parents of Murdered Children Web site, www.pomc.com. Select "petitions" in the top navigation bar.

What about the kid's who teased and tormented Donald every single day at Truesdale Jr. High. Are we not just as guilty of Nancy's murder? Are we to blame for what became of Donald? YES and everyone should be ashamed of themselfs. You know who you are.

You're not serious, are you?

First of all I am not defending the actions of Donald Wacker or Doil Lane, but I am wondering what caused these actions.

Nola Folston said at his parole hearing " If it wasen't for Donald, Nancy would be with us today"

Well for three years I watched Donald being beten up, teased and tormented each and every day at school only because he was in special ed. class at Truesdale.
Same thing can be said here. If the other kid's didn't do the terrible things to him that they did, then he would have been a better person.

Do a search on Doil Lane, read everything you can on his life, then you tell me who is to blame in his case.

Upbringing has everything to do with what happens to you in your life.

Remember in Donald's case, I was there. I think I took part in the teasing a time or two. and YES I am ashamed of myself and feel partly to blame for Nancy's death.

I was in 2nd grade when this happened and I loved down the street from Waker. I have many terror felled memmories. I remember my nephew was walking with me when he drove up from behind and slowed. We took off running and he followed us a good ways. He stopped once we turned down the ally. I still think about what could have happened. He deserves to die as does Doil. Too bad Doil is trying to gain sympathy and have his life spared in TX by acting "special".

I was in 6th grade, walking home from Truesdell, when Donald Wacker tried to coerce me into his car. Thankfully,a neighbor came outside and shouted at him and he immediately drove off. This was right around the time Nancy got abducted. I've put it out of my mind for several years but now that I have a 9 year old daughter, the reality of what could've happened haunts me. I'm praising God that my life was spared, but my heart aches for her family. He needs to die in prison.

Donald lived with me for two years from about 84 to 86. I knew this guy. He was very mentally challenged, to put it nicely. He lived with me because I felt sorry for him. I can clearly see how he could be completely controlled by someone like Mr. Lane. I feel sorry for Nancy, but....I also feel sorry for Donald.

As I knew Donald....he was simply a scared child. I am not defending his part in this, ....I just want everyone to know how vulnerable this guy was to control by a bad person. Again, this is why I let him move in with me at the time. I felt sorry for him.

There are many mentally challenged individuals out there and they don't kidnap, rape and kill children. This man should rot in hell! There's no excuses for the dispicable actions of these animals!

SINCE THE GOVERNMENT DOES NOT PROVIDE A PLACE TO PUT PEOPLE LIKE DONALD, HE MIGHT AS WELL STAY IN PRISON. HE HAS TO BE CONTAINED AND WATCHED. I REMEMBER WHEN THIS WAS ON THE NEWS AND THEY WERE LOOKING FOR NANCY. I WAS SO WORRIED FOR HER AND HER PARENTS. I AM SO SORRY HOW TIT ENDED. PLEASE DONT TAKE A CHANCE HE COULD DO THIS TO SOMEONE ELSE. KEEP HIM WHERE HE BELONGS, PRISON.
