George Anthony Defiant and Casey Anthony's parents leave law office visibly upset

What is this guy even thinking? And what is going on with Conway?

Casey Anthony's parents leave law office visibly upset

.
George and Cindy Anthony answered questions under oath today in civil case brought by a woman suing their daughter for defamation.
.
A visibly upset Cindy Anthony left the downtown Orlando law office of Morgan and Morgan late this afternoon after three-and-a-half hours of questioning by John Morgan, the attorney for Zenaida Gonzalez.
.
Minutes before, voices were raised inside the office. Before she left, Cindy Anthony told Morgan, "Don't tell me I can't pray."Anthony said nothing to reporters waiting nearby. George Anthony asked that no one follow them onto the elevator.
.
After the deposition, the couple's lawyer, Brad Conway, said most of the questions focused on the criminal case against their daughter, and had little to do with clearing Gonzalez's name, Conway said."I think it just exacerbates the circus-like atmosphere that has surrounded this case from the beginning," he said.
.
Gonzalez, 38, is suing the Anthonys' daughter, Casey Anthony, who told investigators that a baby sitter named Zenaida Gonalez took her 2-year-old daughter in June. Caylee Marie Anthony, Casey's daughter, was reported missing in July, and her remains were found in December less than a mile from the Anthonys' home in southeast Orange County.
.
Gonzalez claims she lost her job and suffered humiliation and public embarrassment after Casey Anthony's story was publicized.Anthony, 23, is in the Orange County Jail, charged with killing the 2-year-old.
.
Conway asserted that Morgan's primary goal is to get attention, and that his questions were designed to provoke the grandparents. "The questions were designed to evoke emotion. They did," Conway said.
.
George Anthony's deposition finished shortly before 12:30 p.m. Lawyers began questioning Cindy Anthony under oath around 1:30. A transcript of George Anthony's statements shows he was sometimes combative with Morgan. He did not want to go into details about what daughter Casey bought for the family house and how much money he gave her while she and Caylee Marie lived with the family.
.
"Brad, I'm getting ready to end this. I'm getting ready to walk out," he said to his lawyer at one point. George Anthony said he had never heard of Zenaida Gonzalez until July 2008, but had heard references to "Zanny" before that.
.
Later, Morgan said George Anthony responded to a lot of questions but refused to answer some, including details about an incident in which Casey Anthony kept him from looking into the trunk of her car and a conversation he had about the ladder on the side of their pool.
.
Morgan was surprised to learn that George Anthony did not know about the tip that sent private investigator Dominic Casey looking in the woods near the Anthony home in November. George Anthony said he learned about the tip after the child's remains were found a month later, Morgan said. Anthony heard the tip came from a psychic.
.
Casey Anthony's attorney in the civil matter, Jonathan Kasen, was not at the deposition. Morgan said he was "shocked" that her attorney hasn't attended any of the depositions. When asked why he's asking about the crime, Morgan said he can clear his client's name by proving who committed the crime."Who committed this murder has everything to with Zenaida Gonzalez," Morgan said. "Whoever committed this murder means Zenaida didn't."
.
So, George was a total asshole today. And Cindy smacking her gum like the white trash she is. I would never have said that 6 months ago, my heart just ached for them. Still does, but...
.
The best event coming in the near future is that Casey and Jose have countersued Zenaida Gonzales. Sure--go for it. When Casey goes under oath to bring her suit and all questions are open because they are being brought forth in these depositions. ha! I can't wait. And the way it's going, I will not be surprised if Geo and Cindy face charges of obstruction of justice, lying under oath, contempt of court...what else?

Good question regarding what's going on with Conway. I suspect he's just in way over his head and doesn't realize that, since Casey won't talk and has countersued, Morgan has no choice but to conduct his own murder investigation. That's the only way to prove that his client cannot be guilty of the accusation lodged against her.

Baez should have thought this strategy through a whole lot better, obviously. The family cannot be compelled to speak to police, but they can easily be compelled to testify in a civil case.

Then again, Baez is in way over his head, too. While those depositions are unlikely to come into the criminal case directly, they can be used to impeach the Anthonys if they testify in the criminal case. Baez should have made absolutely sure that never happened, by simply allowing a default judgment to be entered against Casey. She has no assets, so that's the logical thing to do.

I don't think Conway realized that the biggest problem, within the strict confines of the defamation suit and its potential consequences, is that Cindy repeated the defamation even knowing it wasn't true. Either Conway didn't realize she had done that, or else he thought she would get a pass because she is a grieving grandparent.

After that deposition though, and especially after the way Cindy treated Zenaida Gonzalez, Cindy may very well be added as a defendant because her behavior in that deposition tends to show malice and reckless disregard for the truth (conditions precedent to defamation). George and Cindy have assets to satisfy a judgment, and it may also be covered by their homeowner's insurance. Any inclination to leave George and Cindy out of the civil case, on the basis that they are grieving grandparents, is now probably out the window.

All in all, some people are just their own worst enemy.
