It is peculiar that local news has kept this story very quiet other than when the initial story broke. The story is reported, but as though it simply involved "multiple partners, not the sex club/swinger party business. The following reports are national and a bit more revealing. Investigators allege he participated in at least 21 Wichita-area sex parties called "swinger" events from January 2009 until this past July, according to the affidavit.

EL DORADO — The adoptive parents of Adam Herrman, who disappeared from his Towanda home at age 11 more than a decade ago, were charged today with felony theft.

The charges are related to the alleged fraudulent receipt of over $50,000 in government assistance for Adam's care, according to Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield.

Doug and Valerie Herrman each posted a $50,000 bond. The couple voluntarily went to the Butler County Jail in response to warrants that were issued against them.

Charges were filed today to avoid questions of whether the five year statute of limitations on the charges has expired. The Herrmans allegedly cashed the last adoption state subsidy check on July 8, 2005, according to Satterfield, six years after Adam's disappearance.

The boy disappeared in 1999, but Butler County authorities didn't learn of Adam's disappearance until late 2008.

"This is not the beginning and end. This is just the beginning for the Herrmans," said Satterfield of the charges. Adam would be 23 if he were still alive.

Thank you Jan. Sincerely. Don't let them slip through the cracks. What about the Internal Revenue Service? If they cashed those adoption checks and claimed them as dependents, I'd bet they claimed him on their federal taxes as well.

Wichita man pays crack dealer with Monopoly money

NBC -- Police in Wichita, Kansas are investigating an odd crime that involves drugs, assault and Monopoly money.
.

It started as a routine traffic stop in a Wichita neighborhood Thursday evening.
When police pulled over the car they found a 33-year-old man bleeding from the head and telling an unusual story.
.

The victim said a couple of weeks ago he bought several hundred dollars of crack-cocaine with Monopoly money and now the dealer was ready for pay back.
.

"The man from whom he had bought the drugs was upset and invited him over to his house and upon arrival struck him in the head several times with a handgun and other people jumped into the fray," said Gordon Bassham with the Wichita Police Department.

The victim was able to get away and escape serious injury.

At this point police say he's being uncooperative.

Despite the unusual circumstances, officers still want to arrest the attacker...

The preliminary hearing for the Inman police chief accused of molesting four children has been rescheduled for 9 a.m. March 26 in McPherson County District Court, according to court records.

Michael L. Akins Jr., 38, who remains in the McPherson County jail on $250,000 bond, was charged last week with 19 criminal counts and is accused of sexually abusing three girls and one boy between the ages of 9 and 14, according to the complaint filed against him by the Kansas Attorney Generals Office.

Akins has hired McPherson-based attorney David Harger to represent him, district court staff confirmed Wednesday...

.

The crimes are alleged to have occurred between December 2008 and December 2009...

.

Akins was arrested Jan. 12 on a warrant after McPherson County Sheriff's deputies forcibly entered his home in Inman.

Inman city officials have suspended Akins without pay and named police officer Bob Herron as acting police chief.Inman Mayor John O'Brien said Wednesday that no action was taken in Monday night's City Council meeting regarding Akin's job status. City officials "will not convict him until he's convicted," O'Brien reiterated Wednesday...

Couple of things. Comments left on the previous Prairie Chicken post (above link) are very supportive of Mike Akins. Don't know the guy, so I have no opinion one way or the other. What I do wonder, though, is why did they have to go to his house to arrest him and break in the door? He was/is the Police Chief--I would think he would walk right in to the station and turn himself in and make a statement on his innocence.

The comments also seem to hold an idea that if the abuse accusations are from step-children, it is less believable than if the children were strangers. I don't understand this logic, unless the posters are saying the children and ex-wife are in cahoots to have Akins falsely incarcerated. Dangerous game, if true. Step-children are in greater danger than random victims, because they are very accessible and under the control of their abusers.

These are just general statements. I'll wait for the court to figure it out.

Inman police chief arrested, accused of child sex crimes

Michael Akins, Inman, Kansas, police chief, has been charged with more than a dozen sex crimes and two counts of battery after he was arrested Tuesday night...

Michael Leland Akins Jr., 38, has been charged in McPherson County District Court with 19 counts that include abusing three girls and one boy under the age of 14. The alleged crimes reportedly occurred between December 2008 and December 2009, Attorney General Steve Six said...

The town's one remaining full-time officer was named acting police chief at a special City Council meeting called this morning, Mayor John O'Brien said...The Police Department has two half-time officers and one part-time officer.

...Six said Akins has been charged with one count of rape, 12 counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child, two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child, one count of indecent solicitation with a child, two counts of battery and one count of lewd and lascivious behavior.

The preliminary hearing for Akins has been set for 3 p.m. on Jan. 15.

In a recent interview, Butler County Attorney Jan Satterfield said she expects to make a decision on charges within the next year. Nearly a year ago, she said Adam's adoptive parents were suspects in his disappearance. In some ways, Satterfield said, the case gets stronger with time. "There is no statute of limitations on murder,'' she said...

Satterfield said that within the next year, she expects to file charges or submit the case to a grand jury so it could consider bringing indictments.

The Herrmans continue to assert that they are innocent, their lawyers say.

In an interview with The Eagle last January, Valerie Herrman, then 52, said that in early May 1999, when Adam was 11, he ran away from their Towanda mobile home and didn't return after she spanked him with a belt. She said she didn't report him missing because she feared it would cause her and her husband to lose custody of Adam and their other children.

Relatives said that Valerie Herrman told them that Adam, who was being home-schooled, was no longer at home because he had been returned to state custody...

Adam's biological father, Irvin Groeninger...thinks authorities are doing everything they can. He said he hopes that charges will be filed. "I'm hoping that there will be justice served on this." And he said he would welcome renewed media attention on the case.

A Wichita man was given a Hard 50 prison sentence Wednesday for the death of an 18-month-old girl who was beaten, tied up in plastic bags and left in an attic to die.

In imposing the sentence, Sedgwick County District Judge Jeff Goering also sentenced Jonell Lloyd, 23, to more than 10 years for child abuse. He ordered Lloyd to serve the sentences consecutively.

Testimony at Lloyd's trial in July showed that he choked and beat Chavira Brown on July 31, 2008, after she woke up with wet pants. Lloyd had been caring for Chavira at the time in a home he shared with his girlfriend at 15th and Green.

Under Kansas law, a Hard 50 sentence, which requires an inmate to serve 50 years before seeing a parole board, can be imposed only in cases where the aggravating factors of a crime outweigh any mitigating factors...

But he said the aggravating factors in the case "vastly outweighed" any mitigating factors.
"Chavira did not die quickly," Goering said in issuing his ruling. "She was left in the attic to slowly asphyxiate over a period of hours."

...In a brief statement before he was sentenced, Lloyd maintained his innocence, telling the judge, "I didn't do it." Chavira's maternal grandmother, Sheervonda Johnson, said after the sentencing that the sentence was appropriate...

She said Chavira will always be remembered. "We all love her," she said. "We all miss her.... I'm glad it's finally over with. We can go on with our lives."

EMT: Bill Moore confessed to Carol Mould’s killing, El Dorado, Kansas

EL DORADO - An emergency medical technician testified this morning in Butler County District Court that Bill Moore confessed in May to killing Carol Mould five years earlier.

Dom Domebo testified at a preliminary hearing...that he was called to Moore's house in Benton on May 20.

Domebo found Moore despondent and saying he wanted to hurt his wife. Domebo said he assured Moore he would be taken care of, and prepared to take him to a Wichita hospital for a mental evaluation.

As the ambulance pulled away from the house, Domebo said Moore told him, ''I killed Carol Mould.''

Mould was a neighbor of his in Benton, Domebo heard Moore say. She was found dead after a fire at her house on Sept. 22, 2004.

Moore, 55, was a Boy Scout leader with no criminal history before his arrest last spring.

'Mother" and boyfriend Reggie Stafford get life sentence in rape of girl

A Wichita woman convicted of prostituting her small daughter to a neighbor received a life prison sentence Thursday. She is not being identified to protect the identities of the victim and her two older daughters.

Reggie Stafford was charged with paying for sex with the child. The only difference, as stated by Sedgwick County Judge Greg Waller who handed out the sentences, is that Reggie Stafford received three consecutive life sentences for repeatedly raping the girl, who was between 5 and 6 years old at the time....he will not be eligible for parole for 75 years....

During a trial in August, the girl testified that her mother would take her to Stafford's house, near where they lived in the Planeview neighborhood, and he would have sex with the young girl...

The mother sobbed as she pleaded with Waller not to send her to prison. Stafford...continued to deny committing the crimes.

Bennett pointed to the testimony where the girl told social workers that Stafford paid her mother with money she used to buy alcohol....

Judge Waller pointed to evidence he would not admit at trial that showed that Stafford had sex with the woman's other two daughters when they were children. They are now grown. Stafford was not charged with those crimes because the statute of limitations had run out. But Waller could consider the evidence during the sentencing...

Wichita, Kansas: Bridget Dietrich, mother of Caitlyn Johnson, arrested

WICHITA, Kansas – Bridget Dietrich, the mother of Caitlyn Johnson, the little girt set on fire by her stepfather is now behind bars herself.

The fire broke out in March and last week Chris Newberry admitted that he had doused the girl in lighter fluid and set her on fire. He also told the court that he had raped the girl.

Wichita police arrested the mother on charges of child endangerment Tuesday.

Bridget Dietrich is behind bars on charges of child endangerment in connection to a fire that burned her 10 year-old daughter. The fire happened in March in Southeast Wichita.

Investigators won't give specifics on the arrest of Dietrich. They say it is in connection with the fire. The arrest documents show Dietrich failed to protect the girl from abuse at the hands of the suspect.

Last week Dietrich's husband, Chris Newberry pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder and rape of the little girl. He admitted to pouring lighter fluid on the girl and then setting her on fire.

She did survive the fire, but has severe burns. Dietrich's five children are now with family. The little girl who was burned lives with her grandmother.

WICHITA — Chris Newberry waived his right to a preliminary hearing this morning and pleaded not guilty to charges that include setting his stepdaughter on fire.

Sedgwick County District Judge Ben Burgess tentatively scheduled Newberry for trial in November. The case is likely to go to trial months later.

Newberry is charged with attempted murder and five counts of aggravated arson. Prosecutors say he doused his 10-year-old stepdaughter, Caitlyn Johnson, with lighter fluid and set her on fire as she slept in her bed last March. Several other family members were at home when the fire broke out.

Reggie Stafford and Skank girlfriend; Jury deciding verdict in abuse trial

WICHITA — The trial of a couple charged with sexually abusing a young girl is now, as I type, in the hands of a Sedgwick County jury.

Prosecutors say the mother of the girl prostituted the child to her friend Reggie Stafford. The jury will consider multiple counts of rape, sodomy and indecent liberties against the couple.

The mother, 48, and Stafford, 51, decided not to present evidence in their defense as their trial resumed this morning. Both face multiple life sentences if convicted under a 2006 statute known as Jessica's Law.

Note to criminal couples: It's always best to go for separate trials. Then you have someone to blame.

Prosecutors say the mother sold the girl, now 7, for sexual favors to Stafford for money, which she spent on whiskey and cigarettes. The alleged abuse happened when the girl was 5.

Because defendants are presumed innocent, and the state is required to prove its case, they are not required to present any evidence or testimony.

WICHITA — A 22-year-old man appeared nervous and shaking as he told a jury that his little sister confided to him that a man had been touching her. The girl was 6 years old at the time, and the man took the stand this morning to testify against his mother.

The 48-year-old mother and her friend Reggie Stafford, 51, are on trial this week accused of multiple counts of rape, sodomy and aggravated indecent liberties with a child. The mother is not being named to avoid identifying the daughter.

Prosecutor Shannon Wilson told jurors this morning that the mother prostituted her daughter out to Stafford for sex. The brother said he had been sitting in the living room when the girl said "Reggie touched her down there." The girl pointed to her vagina, the brother testified. "I was so shocked to hear that from my baby sister," he said. "I didn't know what to do."

Earlier this morning, Ruben Diaz, who lived with the family at the rented house in Planeview, said the older brother told him what had happened to the girl as the men watched television one night. Diaz said he fretted about what he'd heard for a month. "I didn't want to say something that wasn't true," Diaz testified.

After a month or two, Diaz said he told his boss, Bob Barnes. Barnes told jurors he notified the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services the next day.

"I usually try to mind my own business," Barnes said. "But when a 6-year-old is not being protected by the people who are supposed to be protecting her, it's my opinion she is alone in the world. The law ought to get involved."

Authorities removed the girl and the other children from the house in July 2007, about three months after the brother said the girl first confided in him. The couple's defense is questioning what the girl told authorities, saying she has told conflicting stories.

WICHITA, Kansas – Robert Abner, convicted of kidnapping and raping a Viola store clerk, has been sentenced for the crime and will spend more than 47 years in prison.

Abner was convicted on 10 counts, including rape, kidnapping, sodomy and robbery for the incident that occurred in June 2008.

.

He kidnapped the woman and held her for several days before dropping her off in Wichita at her minister’s house. The victim and her husband both spoke during the sentencing.

Good. His defense at trial was that she liked it. She was in on it. He based this on the fact that she didn't fight him to get away. He's twice her size if not more. I hope he doesn't make it out.

Petition opposes parole for accomplice in Nancy Shoemaker murder case

Nineteen years ago, 9-year-old Nancy Shoemaker disappeared while walking to a south Wichita gas station to buy a 7-up for her sick brother.

Her body was found seven months later in a Sumner County hedgerow. She had been kidnapped, raped and killed.

Now friends of the Shoemakers and others who remember the case — including employees of the Phillips 66 station where Nancy headed that day — are circulating petitions in hopes of keeping one of her kidnappers in prison.

Donald Wacker, who was convicted of aiding the kidnapping and murder, will go before the Kansas Parole Board in October...

Wacker is serving a sentence of 16 years to life for helping kidnap Nancy. He testified during trial that he sat by and watched while a co-defendant, Doil Lane, raped and strangled the girl...

Wacker has gone before a parole board twice. In 2004, Joyce Wacker, Donald's mother said on his behalf, "actually, he wasn't the one who done it," Joyce Wacker said...

Nancy Shoemaker would have turned 29 this year...

WICHITA, Kansas – One of the men behind the Oklahoma City bombing has filed a lawsuit, claiming prison food violates his religious beliefs.

Terry Nichols got a life sentence for his part in the 1995 federal building bombing.

The suit filed in March complains that a lack of whole grains and fresh food burdens his Christianity.

Prison officials disagree and are asking the suit be thrown out.

Nichols was a former resident of Herington.

Bond set at $1 million for James W. Thomas, charged with infant son's death

Bond was set Friday at $1 million for a Wichita man accused in the death this week of his 4-month-old son.

James W. Thomas, 31, was charged in Sedgwick County District Court with first-degree murder in the death of Zereon L. Thomas.

Judge Warren Wilbert ordered Thomas to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Aug. 6 and told him he was to have no contact with witnesses in the case.

Wichita police said Thomas took the boy to Wesley Medical Center at 5:20 p.m. Tuesday for treatment of bruises. Police said doctors found injuries to the boy's head and torso that appeared to have occurred at different times.

The boy's mother was in jail at the time on unrelated charges.

Police said Thomas has at least four other children in other states. Although there were indications that some of those children were physically abused, police said, no charges were ever filed against Thomas...

A 4-month-old boy is the city's latest homicide victim, and Wichita police have arrested his 31-year-old father in connection with his death, authorities said Wednesday.

Zereon L. Thomas was pronounced dead shortly after his father took him to Wesley Medical Center at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday...

Zereon's father was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of felony murder and child abuse. Police said that the boy's mother has been in jail for about one week on charges unrelated to the baby's death.

The couple had lived together ...with the baby and their 12-year-old son, police said. That boy is now with family members.

The apartment where the family lived is part of Madison Avenue, a new development of Mennonite Housing, a nonprofit community development organization.

"We're a very family-oriented property, very family-oriented in this community," said Linda Howard, director of property management for Mennonite Housing. "And so it's very heartbreaking to hear that something like that has happened."

Landwehr said the suspect has at least four other children who live in another state. He said authorities learned that some of those children had sustained injuries while they were in his care, but the man was not charged...

Wichita father arrested in connection with baby boy's death

WICHITA — Wichita police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the death of his 4-month-old son on Tuesday.

Zereon L. Thomas is the city's 19th homicide victim this year, and the first child victim.
His father was booked into Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of felony murder and child abuse.
Wichita police Lt. Ken Landwehr said that the man took Zereon to the hospital at about 5:20 p.m. Zereon was pronounced dead shortly after that, police said.

Zereon had injuries to his head and torso that appeared to be "of different ages," said Wichita police Lt. Ken Landwehr.

An autopsy is scheduled for the baby.

Police said that the boy's mother has been in jail for about one week on charges unrelated to the baby's death. nice...

The couple had lived together at a home in the 1000 block of North Madison with the baby and their 12-year-old son, police said. That boy is now with family members.

Benefit planned for Caitlyn Johnson, child set on fire by low-life, monster step-father

A benefit to raise money for burn victim Caitlyn Johnson will be held late this month at the Prairie Rose Chuckwagon near Benton to help with the 10-year-old girl's care and living expenses.

Caitlyn was badly burned in March in a fire that destroyed her family's home.

Chris Newberry, her stepfather, has been charged with attempted murder and five counts of arson in the March 14 fire at the mobile home in the 5400 block of South Kansas.

Prosecutors allege that Newberry sprayed Caitlyn and her bed with lighter fluid and set her on fire while she slept. Newberry and Caitlyn's mother and three younger stepsiblings escaped the fire unharmed.

Bridget Newberry was questioned by police, but officials say she is not considered a suspect in the incident. Relatives of Caitlyn say they have not seen or heard from Bridget since she was questioned by police.

J.W. Johnson, co-owner of the Prairie Rose, is helping organize the July 31, 2009 benefit.
Authorities estimate that Caitlyn suffered second- and third-degree burns over 41 percent of her body.

Her uncle, Kenny Johnson, said he doesn't understand how officials come up with those percentages, because "she's burned all over — it's pretty bad."

She is now in protective police custody, as are Chris and Bridget Newberry's four young children.
"People should understand that Caitlyn will have to endure many surgeries over the next few years," Lisa Stephenson, a family friend, said in an e-mail. "As of today, I don't know of any surgery that will give her back her beautiful face."

The benefit will feature a silent auction from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a live auction at 7:30 p.m. Horse-drawn wagon rides, train rides and old cowboy movies will be available until dinner is served at 6:30 p.m.

An all-you-can-eat smoked brisket dinner will be followed by the live auction and concert by the Prairie Rose Rangers.

The silent and live auction includes autographed memorabilia by sports teams and nationally known bands.

Other items being offered include Western art, horses, horse tack, hay trailer, a mobile power chair, tools, home and garden decor, a pinball machine, fine jewelry by Mike Seltzer, and gift certificates from various businesses.

Additional donations for the auctions are being accepted.

Cash donations can be made at the event or be made to the Caitlyn Benefit Fund at Meritrust Credit Union locations.

Tickets for the benefit are $20 for adults and $10 for children ages 6 to 12.
