Drew Peterson bites the dust!

Everyone in the world knows by now that Drew Peterson was found guilty this afternoon of the 2004 1st degree murder of Kathleen Savio, his ex-wife.  All that's left is the number of years he gets to live in the penitentiary.  I find 60 a nice round number.

The verdict itself was not much of a surprise but you never know for sure, one has to ponder the state of the judicial system and the results of these "sensational" trials, the effect of the media scrutiny on the entire cast from the judge to the victim.  It's all a crap shoot. 

Peterson's team of attorneys will, no doubt, have years of work filing appeals, fighting the inclusion of Kathleen Savio's hearsay statements. 

The Bolingbrook folks can rest assured that Peterson won't be skulking around the neighborhood any time soon, and if he ever gets an opportunity to do so, he won't have a position of authority to back up his bullying.

Hopefully, the families of Kathleen Savio and Stacy Cales Peterson, 4th wife of Peterson who is currently missing, will be able to contact the children of their dear lost one, something that has not happened since shortly after Stacy's disappearance.  The children have had no contact with their mothers families.  Peterson's way of getting rid of them for good. 

Various news web sources have reported that Stephen, Peterson's son from his first marriage has been raising his four younger siblings, apparently with Peterson's police pension of $6,000 monthly, more or less.  That pension should be withdrawn, with Peterson's crime having been committed while he was an active Bolingbrook police officer.  Stephen himself was fired from the same police department several years ago, so he'd have to find a job.  Bar's always need bouncers. 

Then there is Peterson's oldest son Eric.  He has stayed far away from the spotlight and drama of his fathers world.  All I've read about him was a statement that he had no feeling either way about his father.  No love, no hate.  His privacy should definitely be respected, but I still have to wonder why.

So now remains the last piece of this whole ugly puzzle.  Where is Stacy Cales Peterson?  At least when she's found, Drew Peterson will be easy to find.

Still to be decided: whether the judge will allow the jury to hear that hearsay evidence — statements that other witnesses say were made by Savio and Stacy Peterson.

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — A hearing for Drew Peterson ended Friday night with the same question it began with a month ago: Is there enough evidence to convince a judge that the former police officer may have killed his third and fourth wives to keep them from testifying before a jury?

In dramatic closing statements after the last of more than 70 witnesses testified, prosecutors portrayed Peterson as a cold-blooded killer who took the lives of Kathleen Savio in 2004 and Stacy Peterson three years later to keep them from getting his money."They are killed so they can't take the witness stand in a divorce proceeding," said Will County Assistant State's Attorney John Connor.

JOLIET, Ill. - Days before a Stacy Peterson vanished, she told a divorce attorney Harry Smith that husband Drew thought she suspected he had killed his previous wife and suggested extorting money from him to keep quiet, the lawyer testified Monday.

The dramatic details provided by Harry Smith were the first in more than three weeks of testimony that recounted Stacy Peterson talking directly about Drew Peterson's alleged involvement in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio...

...Smith said that Stacy Peterson had called him for her own divorce, but he told her he could not represent her because he thought it was a conflict of interest, (he having represented Kathleen Savio before her death.)

Kathleen Savio's 2004 bathtub drowning death was murder, a state-hired pathologist testified Friday, in part because he believed injuries to the front, back and sides of her body could not have been caused accidentally. Dr. Larry Blum performed a second autopsy on Savio's body...

...Blum said the position of Savio's body in the tub — facedown with both feet pressed hard against the tub wall, her toes hyperextended — made it "highly, highly unlikely" she drowned accidentally. Judging from the flow of blood, it appeared a 1-inch gash on the back of her head was inflicted after her body settled in the tub, Blum said...

(This makes me sick) Peterson leaned in and squinted when autopsy photos of his third wife were shown on a computer monitor. He seemed to take copious notes...

On the night of March 1, 2004, when she and a neighbor discovered Kathleen Savio's body curled in a fetal position in an empty bathtub, Mary Pontarelli ran screaming from the bathroom into Savio's adjoining bedroom...

When Pontarelli returned to the bathroom that night, she checked Savio's wrist for a pulse. She ran her hand through Savio's wet hair and noticed it wasn't pinned up like normal. She saw no towels, bathrobe or clothes. A rug Pontarelli remembered sitting next to the tub was gone.

...Witnesses testified that Savio, fearful of Peterson, always kept her front door and screen door locked when she was gone or inside her home. But locksmith Robert Akin Jr. said only the front doorknob –– one of at least three locks on the two doors –– was locked when he was called to her home that night.

Mary Pontarelli's son Nick, 19, testified that Savio said Peterson would try to kill her... After her ex-husband moved out, Savio had Nick Pontarelli install a new lock and deadbolt on the home's front door. His father, Thomas, installed a deadbolt on Savio's bedroom door at her request after she said items were missing from the room.

Savio told Nick Pontarelli that Peterson had bugged the home and was recording phone conversations...he took photos of damage inside Savio's home that she said was caused by Peterson, including a drilled hole and scratches above the deadbolt on the bedroom door, and repairs from a large hole cut into the drywall of the garage that Peterson has admitted making to gain access inside the home. Pontarelli said Savio was planning to use the photos in the property dispute...

Emergency medical technician Louis Oleszkiewicz testified that a towel shown in crime scene photos alongside the tub was not there when he arrived. Under questioning from a defense attorney, he said he did not see a bathrobe and two towels shown in a photo, hung on the inside of the bathroom door, which were not visible when the door was open.

Shortly before she disappeared, Stacy Peterson told a neighbor that if she did disappear, it was because husband Drew Peterson had killed her, the neighbor testified this morning. "He's going to kill me," Sharon Bychowski quoted Stacy as telling her about a week before she was reported missing.

The older of two children born to Peterson's first wife, Carol Brown, who is neither missing nor murdered, Eric Peterson, 31, recounted a savage tale of domestic abuse he says Drew Peterson perpetrated on Savio in 1993.

Eric Peterson and his younger brother, Stephen Peterson, were visiting their father and Savio for the weekend when Drew hauled his wife through the front door by her hair.

"She was being dragged and fighting to stop being dragged," Eric Peterson said, adding that Savio was shouting obscenities at her husband, begging the children to call the police and "screaming for help."

Eric Peterson said his father ordered his sons upstairs and pulled Savio down to the basement. He said the commotion downstairs sounded like a train ran through the house.

One of Savio's sisters and the police later showed up. The next morning, Eric Peterson said, there was no sign of Savio, but the house was strewn with broken glass and overturned furniture.

Eric Peterson said it was apparent that Savio was drunk the night Drew Peterson dragged her around.

The bid by Drew Peterson's lawyers to bar the public from a landmark hearsay hearing failed Friday, setting the stage for potentially explosive testimony to air in a proceeding that could last longer than a month.

Judge Stephen White rejected the arguments of Peterson's attorneys Joel Brodsky and Andrew Abood that keeping the hearing open might bias potential jurors against their client, who is accused of drowning his wife.

The hearing will determine what, if any, hearsay evidence will be allowed at Peterson's murder trial. Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow countered Peterson's lawyers and called sealing the hearing un-American...

At the upcoming hearing, Peterson could face up to 60 prosecution witnesses -- ranging from a man he allegedly solicited to kill his third wife, Kathleen Savio, to his stepbrother Thomas Morphey, who claims he was asked by Peterson to kill his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, and that he later helped carry her body out of the family home in a blue barrel.

Peterson is charged with drowning Savio in 2004. State Police suspect he also might have killed Stacy Peterson, who vanished in October 2007. Peterson has not been charged in connection with her disappearance...

Drew Peterson suing bank for freezing line of credit

Drew Peterson is suing JPMorgan Chase for freezing a $220,000 line of homeowner's credit he was using to pay for legal and other expenses, according to a lawsuit filed late Monday.

The federal lawsuit alleges Chase -- shortly after Peterson was arrested in May on charges he drowned his third wife -- illegally shut the spigot on the home equity line that Peterson and fourth wife Stacy took out on their Bolingbrook home in 2005.

The bank sent Peterson a letter dated May 15 saying the account was being frozen due to Peterson's "imprisonment." Affidavits filed by Chase executives in response to subpoenas filed by Peterson's criminal defense attorney said it was a "pure banking decision" and that Peterson would be "unable to pay his account if we allowed it to be substantially drawn down."

In his lawsuit Peterson argues that his income has improved since taking out the original line of credit. The former Bolingbrook police sergeant now makes $108,909 a year -- including $2,758 in monthly Social Security benefits and his $6,000-a-month police pension...

Joel Brodsky, Peterson's lawyer, recently said he would not fight efforts by Peterson's homeowner's insurance to remove itself from paying for his legal defense in a civil wrongful death lawsuit filed by Savio's family.

JOLIET, Ill. - A judge who denied a request to move the murder trial of former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson out of Will County has dealt Peterson's attorneys another setback.

On Friday, after denying the change of venue motion, Will County Judge Stephen White ruled constitutional a hearsay law prosecutors want to use to present statements Kathleen Savio made before her death.

State's Attorney James Glasgow wouldn't discuss what statements he wants a jury to hear. But when Peterson was arrested in May he said the law would allow Savio to "testify from the grave."

Peterson has pleaded not guilty in Savio's 2004 death. He's a suspect in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, but has not been charged.

My guess would be that the evidence in question is the letter to the District Attorney claiming that Drew's next step would be to take her children (which he was already trying to do) or to kill her (which he ended up doing.) In writing and mailed to an official. Good for Kitty.

Some 240 potential jurors in the Drew Peterson murder trial were brought into Will County court Friday, asked to fill out questionnaires and ordered by the judge not to view any media reports about the case.

Joel Brodsky, one of Peterson's attorneys, called the move "highly unusual" in that no trial date has been set and the judge has not ruled on a defense motion to move the trial because of intense publicity.

Circuit Judge Stephen White said he was working under the assumption that the trial will be held in Will County and will rule on the issue Oct. 2. He had jurors complete a 10-page, 33-question questionnaire that asked about their news consumption and family background. Jurors were also asked if they knew anyone on a list of 493 people whose names may be mentioned at trial.

Police officers or investigators make up as much as a fifth of the list, Peterson attorney Reem Odeh said in court.The judge introduced the jurors to Peterson, who -- dressed in a gray suit and tie, wearing white socks with dark shoes (it's hilarious to me that it is reported about his white socks with dark shoes every time he goes to court)-- stood and said: "Good day, folks, good day."

A handful of the potential jurors smiled when White informed them of the case they may be hearing. Peterson's attorney continues to attempt to have the trial moved to another venue...

Drew Peterson's attorneys filed a motion today challenging the constitutionality of a new state law some call "Drew's law" that allows judges to consider hearsay evidence under certain conditions.

...If prosecutors can prove Kathleen Savio was killed to prevent her from testifying, the law allows a judge to admit Savio's letters and statements to friends and family into evidence.

Peterson's attorneys argue that the law, which took effect in December, violates a defendant's 6th Amendment right to cross-examine witnesses, goes against a state constitutional proscription against retroactively applied laws and "erodes the presumption of innocence" by asking a judge to find that Peterson murdered Savio to silence her before the trial even starts.

"There is a profound unfairness in allowing the state's attorney to draft, and the legislature to enact, a law aimed at obtaining the conviction of a single individual," the motion says, referring to Will County state's attorney Jim Glasgow, who pushed for the law.

..."The new hearsay law ... would allow gossip, innuendo, rumor and back fence scandal to come into court and masquerade as evidence," the motion further states. The motion is posted on the Web site of Peterson's attorneys.

But a spokesman for the state's attorney's office said the law was specifically drafted to meet constitutional muster, and added that similar laws have been enacted in more than a dozen states.

"Mr. Glasgow is eager to argue this motion and he believes thoroughly that he will prevail as to the constitutionality issues," said spokesman Chuck Pelkie.

Peterson attorney Joel Brodsky countered, "It's not that often that a county judge declares a law unconstitutional but I don't think he has a choice. It's an ill-conceived law that's been subject to a lot of legal criticism."

Brodsky said that if Judge Stephen White rules the law unconstitutional, he hopes Peterson could be released on bond. Peterson's attorneys are also asking that the trial be moved outside Will County.

JOLIET — Saying Drew Peterson's attorneys were attempting to simplify disclosure evidence into "CliffsNotes," prosecutors thwarted the bid Thursday but will have to pare an 805-witness list down to the 50 most likely to testify.

John Connor, the chief of the major crime unit for the state's attorney, countered an eight-point motion from Peterson's defense team that would help the accused wife-killer's lawyers more easily navigate the thousands of pages of discovery evidence.

"I think what the counsel is asking us to do is give them CliffsNotes on this," Connor said, referring to the study guides that simplify books for students.

One of Peterson's attorneys, Joel Brodsky, argued that the first-degree murder indictment against Peterson was too vague. Joel, I think it will all be made clear to you soon...

He wanted prosecutors to provide detailed descriptions of such matters as how Peterson allegedly drowned his third wife, Kathleen Savio; whether he used any weapons or tools to kill her; exactly where and when the alleged 2004 murder occurred; and how Peterson may have gained entry to her home. "Was it a key?" Brodsky asked. "Was it, 'Beam me up, Scotty'?"

Connor countered that all of the information Brodsky is entitled to can be found in the discovery evidence already handed over by prosecutors. But Brodsky said it was too much for him and Peterson's other attorneys to sift through. Drew--you get what you pay for, huh? Go on TV asking for a free lawyer, and you'll get a dumbass like Brodsky.

Judge Stephen White denied all the requests in Brodsky's motion, but did tell Connor to come up with an approximate time Savio was last seen alive and about when her body was found.

755 witnesses too many

Brodsky also took issue with the 805 men and women listed as possible witnesses against Peterson. Connor is supposed to come up with the 50 most likely to testify by July 10, but was not forbidden from calling the remaining 755 at trial, which is scheduled to start Aug. 24.

White also shot down Brodsky's request for Peterson to take possession of the evidence against him while he is in jail. White said Peterson could review the evidence in the presence of his attorneys, who have been granted unlimited jailhouse visits with their client...

Actually, in this case Peterson probably IS more capable of preparing a defense.

The trial is scheduled to start on August 24.

The Los Angeles attorney representing Drew Peterson's young love shot down a claim from the accused wife-killer's lawyer that a state cop hit on her client.

"Chrissie has not had dinner with or gone to the movies with any police officer other than Drew Peterson and she has no interest in doing so," the attorney, Gloria Allred, said in a written statement. "She does not feel that she was 'hit on' by any police officer. We do not think there is a basis for filing a complaint against any police officer and we have no plans to file such a complaint."

Following a Tuesday court hearing, one of Peterson's attorneys, Joel Brodsky, announced that a state police detective asked Peterson's 24-year-old girlfriend, Christina Raines, to go out with him on a date.

So, would that be illegal? Do cops not date single women?

Brodsky failed to return calls for comment on Allred's statement...

Allred's involvement in the Peterson case is not the first time she has stepped into a high-profile murder prosecution. She represented Amber Frey, the girlfriend of convicted wife-killer Scott Peterson, and was also the attorney for the family of O.J. Simpson's slain wife, Nicole Brown Simpson. Allred is the mother of television personality Lisa Bloom.

More than 40,000 pages of investigative reports is delaying Drew Peterson's trial for the 2004 murder of third wife Kathleen Savio.

Peterson and his attorneys agreed Tuesday to postpone his scheduled Aug. 24 trial for Savio's bathtub drowning death so they have time to study thousands of pages of [evidence]...

His defense team, though, indicated they plan an aggressive defense, including launching a pre-trial legal challenge against the controversial new state "hearsay" law...

And, Peterson's attorneys also contended that an Illinois State Police investigator acted improperly by asking out Peterson's girlfriend...He's possessive even in jail. I doubt this stupid girl will spend decades waiting for him. If being creepy could get you the death penalty...
