Defense: Phillip Garrido hears "angels' voices"

February 25, 2010

(CNN) -- Phillip Garrido, a California sex offender suspected of abducting Jaycee Dugard in 1991 and keeping her captive for 18 years is suffering from "serious mental illness," defense attorneys say in court papers. "It appears that Phillip Garrido has been hearing [the] voices of angels for years," said documents filed Wednesday in El Dorado County Superior Court.

The court papers dispute prosecutors' asserting that Garrido is a "master manipulator" who is still trying to influence his victim...

.
Garrido, 58, and his wife, Nancy, are charged with 29 felony counts in the kidnapping...
.
Both Phillip Garrido, who was a registered sex offender on parole at the time of his arrest in August, and Nancy Garrido have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them...

Letalvis Cobbins receives additional sentences

February 27, 2010
knoxnew.com

KNOXVILLE - A Knox County judge today added 100 years to murderer Letalvis Cobbins' life without parole sentence.

The additional time was for crimes committed leading up the deaths of Knox County couple Channon Christian, 21, and Christopher Newsom, 23, in January 2007.

...The decision came after a hearing to determine whether Cobbins should receive additional punishment for crimes that preceded the deaths of the University of Tennessee student and her boyfriend, a trim carpenter...

Cobbins had testified at his own trial that Eric Boyd and Davidson killed Chris Newsom. Boyd is in a federal prison for carjacking Channon Christians vehicle.

Cobbins was convicted of their deaths and of kidnapping and robbing them and of raping Christian...was the first of four defendants to be tried in the case.

Davidson has been sentenced to death. Suspect George Thomas was sentenced to life without parole. Suspect Vanessa Coleman faces trial in May.

Drew Peterson Hearsay Hearing Concludes

Three weeks and more than 70 witnesses later, pretrial hearing for Drew Peterson comes to close
.
DON BABWIN
Associated Press Writer
February 19, 2010
.
JOLIET, Ill. (AP) — A hearing for Drew Peterson ended Friday night with the same question it began with a month ago: Is there enough evidence to convince a judge that the former police officer may have killed his third and fourth wives to keep them from testifying before a jury?
.
In dramatic closing statements after the last of more than 70 witnesses testified, prosecutors portrayed Peterson as a cold-blooded killer who took the lives of Kathleen Savio in 2004 and Stacy Peterson three years later to keep them from getting his money."They are killed so they can't take the witness stand in a divorce proceeding," said Will County Assistant State's Attorney John Connor.
.
But defense attorneys said the case against Peterson is built on lies...
.
...Friday's closing statements marked the first time prosecution said outright they believe he killed Stacy Peterson...
.
"Mr. Peterson's wives are two-for-two in predicting their own murders," he said.
.
White did not say when he would rule on the hearsay, but he did say he would order the ruling sealed until a jury is selected. He explained that he didn't want his decision to influence potential jurors.
.
.
Brodsky originally declared they had 30 defense witnesses, waiting in the wings to testify on Drew's behalf. They ended up calling three.

Misty Croslin at arraignment

right: Misty in Chains
By Dana Treen
February 19, 2010
.
PALATKA — As Misty Croslin stood before a judge in shackles and chains Thursday to face seven drug trafficking charges, a California bounty hunter was offering her a way out of jail in an exchange of information...
.
...bounty hunter Leonard Padilla said he was willing to pay a bond he estimated at $135,000 to get her out. The deal...“It’s got to lead me to Haleigh.”
.
...Padilla wants to question Croslin, then decide if he will arrange a bond.
.
On jail tapes with her mother Lisa, Misty Croslin is adamant that she be bonded out before they talk. That's not going to fly. Leonard was stung on that by Casey Anthony.
.
Padilla said he also has been helping Croslin’s parents and bought a 2001 Ford Taurus for her father, who is not working and says notoriety from Haleigh’s case has kept him from getting a job. Padilla said he also gave Hank Croslin money to meet expenses.
.
Croslin was arraigned on seven charges of trafficking Thursday and was brought to the courtroom in a blue jail uniform and with cornrows in her hair. Two of the charges were new, and could increase the bail. She faces an additional trafficking charge in St. Johns County.
.
...She looked somber during the appearance, wearing waist chains and handcuffs. Investigators from Haleigh’s case stood in the back of the courtroom during the hearing...
.
In another twist Thursday, Croslin’s mother, Lisa, was arrested on a warrant as she left the courthouse following an earlier hearing. The charge stems from an incident at the Palatka Walmart around Christmas, Hank Croslin Sr. said of his wife.
.
Lisa Croslin is charged with grand theft after a purse was reported stolen to the Palatka Police Department, authorities said. She was released on bail later in the day, according to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office jail records...
.
Good grief. What is wrong with these people?
.
They act without any apparent thought of consequences--is it a sense of entitlement or contempt for others who have dish soap?--mother and son are habitual thieves, Tommy is a burglar.
.
Not one seems to understand the concept of working a job to pay the bills, to be responsible to not only family but their community.
.
On the Croslin jailhouse tapes Tommy and Misty each try to get THEIR phone and commissary accounts padded and bail posted ahead of the other. They sound like they are 10 and 12, fighting over whose turn it is to sit in the front.
.
In Tommy's communications he constantly puts his wants over the needs of his wife and kids. He told his wife Linsey not to spend the income tax refund to buy beds for the boys, in case he could bond out. wth? He told her they could get money from her grandparents.
.
And both Tommy and Misty have spent many dollars on the phone telling their parents and sibling Timmy to spend their income tax refunds to get them out. No one works at all. It's really mind-boggling how selfish Tommy and Misty are. And then their mama likes a five-finger discount as well.
.
So, Padilla. He bought Hank and Lisa a 3K used car, which I'm sure is wired for sound, if not video. He also gave them money for "expenses" and is reportedly willing to help them get a place to live, which I would also suspect to be bugged. He's given Lisa a cell phone, a nice one "like Chelsea's". You can bet that has a nifty GPS device activated, and a detail monthly report with the bill. (If I remember correctly, Drew Peterson could pull up a website at any time and see where his missing wife's cell phone was, geographically--he could completely track her movement.)
.
If Padilla is doing this because his heart is in the right place, more power to him. But I suspect he really enjoys seeing his face on television.

Italian Chef Missing at Sea on Caribbean Cruise

Officials say Italian cruise ship chef missing in Caribbean; life preserver can't be found

.

Colombian maritime authorities searched Sunday for an Italian chef believed to have gone overboard from a U.S. cruise ship off Colombia's Caribbean coast, officials and the man's family said.
.
There were different accounts about when and where Angelo Faliva, 31, was last seen as the Princess Cruises "Coral Princess" sailed from Aruba to Cartagena, Colombia, between Nov. 25 and 26.
.
Princess Cruises spokeswoman Julie Benson said Faliva was last seen on a deck at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, when he spoke with another crew member as the ship neared Cartagena.
.
His family, however, said they had been told that he had unexpectedly walked out of the ship's galley at about 8:15 p.m. the night before, while he was working the dinner shift, and never returned and hadn't been seen since.
.
The Faliva family said it was alerted Thursday that he had been reported missing and that a life preserver was also missing, with its nighttime illumination flares torn off and left aboard the ship.

So...when a CHEF goes missing, it's a big deal, but losing the occasional cruise passenger is business as usual. For the life of me, I can't imagine that anyone would commit suicide by shark. Maybe they count on drowning before hypothermia or predators. But imagine being in the dark water at night--pitch black. Just the thought makes me woozy.

Highlights include Caylee Anthony's car seat, baby-doll, the Gatorade bottle and syringe. There are also several views of the serrations of the knife found in Casey Anthony's car, showing fibers stuck to at least two teeth of the knife--and photographs of the duct tape, including fibers that thread through the tape giving it strength. (CBS/AP) A part-time south Alabama evangelist pleaded not guilty Tuesday to a murder charge in the death of his wife, a mother of eight whose body had been stored in a freezer at least three years.
.
Through his attorney, Anthony Hopkins, 37, also pleaded not guilty to separate charges of sexual abuse, rape, sodomy and incest.
.
Prosecutors said the teenage victim in that case is a female relative who is pregnant with his baby. Her disclosure of the alleged sexual abuse led police to find the body in the freezer on July 28.
.
Mobile County District Judge Charles McKnight set bond at $750,000 on the murder charge in the death of 36-year-old Arletha Hopkins and $10,000 on each of the sex charges. It was not immediately known if Hopkins, father of six of the children, could post bond. He made no comment in court and was returned to jail.
.
Hopkins maintains his innocence, said defense attorney Jeff Deen.
.
A trial date has not been set, as far as I can find.

Stacy Peterson may have mulled extorting Ill. murder suspect Drew Peterson

Right: Kathleen Savio
February 8, 2010
The Chicago Tribune
By DON BABWIN Associated Press Writer
.

JOLIET, Ill. - Days before a Stacy Peterson vanished, she told a divorce attorney Harry Smith that husband Drew thought she suspected he had killed his previous wife and suggested extorting money from him to keep quiet, the lawyer testified Monday.
The dramatic details provided by Harry Smith were the first in more than three weeks of testimony that recounted Stacy Peterson talking directly about Drew Peterson's alleged involvement in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio...
Drew Peterson remains the only suspect in Savio's death and Stacy Peterson's disappearance...
...Smith said that Stacy Peterson had called him for her own divorce, but he told her he could not represent her because he thought it was a conflict of interest, (he having represented Kathleen Savio before her death.)
.
He told her that plan might be dangerous, but Stacy Peterson said her husband would never try to hurt her and that she had too much dirt on him at the police department. "She wasn't concerned about her safety," Smith said.
[before Savio's murder] a judge had told Harry Smith and Peterson's attorney that...Savio would be allowed to keep the couple's Bolingbrook home, receive a share of his police pension, receive child support and some money from the sale of a bar the couple had owned. "He was not happy, he was angry," said Smith recalling how he watched Drew Peterson's lawyer explain to him what the judge had told him... ewww, I'll bet he was po'd. what an evil man.

Judge: Nancy Grace's deposition can be videotaped

The Associated Press
The Miami Herald
January 26, 2010

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A judge has ruled that talk show host Nancy Grace can be videotaped while answering questions in a Florida wrongful death lawsuit,
but lawyers representing Melinda Duckett's family can't share the recording with "any third party"...Grace accused Duckett of hiding something. Duckett shot and killed herself the day the taped interview was scheduled to broadcast.

By Stephen Hudak, Orlando Sentinel
February 5, 2010

OCALA - A filing in a federal lawsuit against Nancy Grace says an employee of the cable talk show knew Melinda Duckett had once been involuntarily committed for mental instability before the Florida mom was grilled on the show...

Duckett reported that her 2-year-old son, Trenton, was missing from his bedroom of their garden-floor apartment in Leesburg on Aug. 27, 2006. She then committed suicide at her grandparents' home in The Villages on Sept. 8, 2006, hours before her interview was scheduled to air on Headline News or HLN, a division of CNN.

Grace, the host of a self-titled show on HLN, formerly CNN Headline News, is being sued by Duckett's family. They blame her for inflicting emotional distress on Melinda Duckett during a taped interview for the show...

[The lawsuit] suggests negligence and can prove that Grace and her show's employees "tricked" Duckett's lawyer into allowing the 21-year-old mother to appear on the program...Schulte, who testified at a deposition Dec. 21, was not told that Grace planned to interrogate Duckett...
Grace, who testified in a deposition Jan. 28 in Atlanta, said she was not informed of Schiffman's representations to Duckett's lawyer and did not read any pre-interview notes Schiffman made about Duckett.

Grace also testified that she routinely throws out pre-interview notes. (Well, this explains why she gets so many things wrong.)
Melinda Duckett is now dead, and Trenton Duckett remains missing.
Leesburg police have labeled Melinda Duckett as the lone suspect in the boy's disappearance.
The trial in the wrongful-death lawsuit is set for July 6 in federal court in Ocala, Orange County, Florida.

A federal judge in Ocala Monday signed the order preventing the release of any video. Duckett's family is asking for damages in excess of $15,000. OK, when I read that I had to read it twice. That and a heartfelt apology from Nancy Grace for being such a bitch to their granddaughter, and the whole thing would probably go away. Would that be so hard for Grace?

Pathologist testifies that Kathleen Savio was murdered

Position in tub makes it unlikely she drowned accidentally, Larry Blum says
.
Chicago tribune
By Steve Schmadeke
February 5, 2010
Kathleen Savio's 2004 bathtub drowning death was murder, a state-hired pathologist testified Friday, in part because he believed injuries to the front, back and sides of her body could not have been caused accidentally. Dr. Larry Blum performed a second autopsy on Savio's body...
.
...Blum said the position of Savio's body in the tub — facedown with both feet pressed hard against the tub wall, her toes hyperextended — made it "highly, highly unlikely" she drowned accidentally. Judging from the flow of blood, it appeared a 1-inch gash on the back of her head was inflicted after her body settled in the tub, Blum said...
.
(This makes me sick) Peterson leaned in and squinted when autopsy photos of his third wife were shown on a computer monitor. He seemed to take copious notes...
.
Blum testified the alleged murder scene was "pristine" with little blood, no splashed water and nothing around the tub knocked over..."
.

State Investigator Robert Deel said he had been handling crime scene investigations for about one year when he was called to Savio's Bolingbrook house in the overnight hours of March 1, 2004...Deel also testified that after Stacy Peterson's disappearance in 2007, he was asked by Will County prosecutors to never again process a crime scene in their county. Also,
Master Sgt. Bryon Falat was taken off the investigation March 10 for objecting to lack of investigation.

Neighbor: Savio was terrified of Peterson

Chicagotribune.com
By Steve Schmadeke and Erika Slife
February 1, 2010

On the night of March 1, 2004, when she and a neighbor discovered Kathleen Savio's body curled in a fetal position in an empty bathtub, Mary Pontarelli ran screaming from the bathroom into Savio's adjoining bedroom...

When Pontarelli returned to the bathroom that night, she checked Savio's wrist for a pulse. She ran her hand through Savio's wet hair and noticed it wasn't pinned up like normal. She saw no towels, bathrobe or clothes. A rug Pontarelli remembered sitting next to the tub was gone.

...Witnesses testified that Savio, fearful of Peterson, always kept her front door and screen door locked when she was gone or inside her home. But locksmith Robert Akin Jr. said only the front doorknob –– one of at least three locks on the two doors –– was locked when he was called to her home that night.

Mary Pontarelli's son Nick, 19, testified that Savio said Peterson would try to kill her... After her ex-husband moved out, Savio had Nick Pontarelli install a new lock and deadbolt on the home's front door. His father, Thomas, installed a deadbolt on Savio's bedroom door at her request after she said items were missing from the room.

Savio told Nick Pontarelli that Peterson had bugged the home and was recording phone conversations...he took photos of damage inside Savio's home that she said was caused by Peterson, including a drilled hole and scratches above the deadbolt on the bedroom door, and repairs from a large hole cut into the drywall of the garage that Peterson has admitted making to gain access inside the home. Pontarelli said Savio was planning to use the photos in the property dispute...

Emergency medical technician Louis Oleszkiewicz testified that a towel shown in crime scene photos alongside the tub was not there when he arrived. Under questioning from a defense attorney, he said he did not see a bathrobe and two towels shown in a photo, hung on the inside of the bathroom door, which were not visible when the door was open.
